How To: Mount A Spoiler

Ever bought a spoiler or other fiberglass accessory for you car and suddenly realised that you had to no possible way to mount it? No bolts, no nothing. Well here I'll teach you how, since the same thing happened to me.

First, take an empty roll of toilet paper or paper towels. You only need the carboard. Cut a circle off the end, this is used to contain the fiberglass resin. The cirle only needs to be 1/4 inch or less. You don't need much. Hold the cardboard secure using a hot glue gun. This keeps your mold in place and keeps the liquid fiberglass from leaking out.

Next you'll want to cut an area for the bolts to mount on the other side of your trunk, bumper, etc. In this case its my trunk.

Figure out what length of bold you need to fit through to the other side. You'll need some elevator bolts such as these. Elevator bolts have a flat head and work perfectly for this application. You'll also want to secure some fastening hardware. Washers and locking washers are a great addition to help secure your spoiler.

Next mix your liquid fiberglass with hardner and pour it into your cardboard mold. Fiberglass takes a long time to dry, especially in colder weather so there's no need to rush. Fill the mold about 1/2 way full of fiberglass and stick the bolt into the resin. Move it around to get a nice coating of fiberglass. Once you've got your bolt exactly where you want it pour a little more fiberglass into your mold to secure it.

Repeat the steps and you'll soon have all your bolts mounted and ready to go! You should wait at least 24 hours before you try to bolt on your spoiler just to make sure the resin is dry.
